Gelled diet for screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) mass production

A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices and characteristics conducive to centralization and mechanization of rearing procedures.     

Interleukin-4 activates ion channels in B lymphocytes.

The lymphokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) has been shown to induce dramatic changes in the physiology of resting B cells. We have applied the patch clamp technique in the cell attached and inside/out configurations to resting and IL-4-treated B cells to determine whether specific ion conductances result as a consequence of IL-4 action. We report here that two distinct ion channel events occur in B lymphocytes after treatment with IL-4, (i) induction of an inward rectifying K+ channel that is not observed in untreated cells, and (ii) activation of a large conductance anion channel that is normally silent in non-treated cells in the cell attached patch configuration. These data present the first evidence of a direct effect by IL-4 on ion channels and we suggest roles for these two ionic conductances in IL-4-induced B cell activation.     

Response of the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis to an oviposition pheromone associated with conspecific eggs

Response of female Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) to an oviposition attractant and/or stimulant associated with conspecific eggs was investigated in the laboratory. Females of two populations laid significantly higher mean number of eggs on sites with 160 eggs already present than on bare control sites. This response was lost when eggs placed on test sites were previously washed in organic solvents and distilled water. Age of eggs placed on test sites, 1-6 days after being laid, did not seem to affect the oviposition response of the females. Comparing effects of different numbers of eggs, positive responses were obtained when 80, 160 or 320 eggs were placed on test sites. No significant differences between mean egg numbers laid on test sites and controls were detected when batches of only 20 or 40 eggs were used.     

A rRNA-mRNA base pairing model for UGA-dependent termination.

A series of site-directed mutations has been constructed in E coli 16S rRNA and shown to suppress UGA-dependent translational termination. With the exception of the C726 to G base change, all were constructed in helix 34. Characterization of these mutations is reviewed here and from these data and mRNA-rRNA base pairing model for the termination event is presented. The interaction functions via antiparallel base pairing between either 1 of the 2 UCA motifs in helix 34 and the complementary UGA stop codon on the message, thus forming a quasicontinuous A-type helical structure that is further stabilized by stacking enthalpy. Finally, rRNA motifs potentially required for UAA and UAG-dependent translational termination are discussed.     

Canopy structure measurement by gap fraction analysis using commercial instrumentation

In the past few years, a number of systems for making indirectcanopy structural estimates have become commercially available.These include linear sensors, such as the DEMON, line quantumsensors, and hemispherical sensors, such as the LAI-2000, theLeaf Laser, and the Cl-100.
